What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain that are custom designed to fit, not just the teeth you have, but the teeth you want. With your new veneers we can:
- Hide any imperfections.
- Cover up teeth that have been chipped or fractured.
- Give teeth a longer or shorter appearance as needed.
- Fill in the space if there are gaps.
- Cover teeth that have been badly stained.
- Give teeth a straighter, less crooked appearance.
- Give teeth the shape you want if your natural teeth are misshapen.
Veneers can completely reshape the look of your teeth and therefore, your smile. In many cases, they are a good alternative to crowns and the ideal solution in treating many cosmetic dental conditions for the front teeth. Dental veneers are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile, they are durable and should last the patient several years with normal use.
How are veneers bonded to my teeth? The process of receiving porcelain veneers is usually done in two office visits, depending on what prep work is needed.
Your first appointment is a consultation and evaluation of what you are looking for. We will review your options, including the shade that is closest to your natural tooth color, and then take a mold or impression of your teeth. This mold is sent to a dental lab for the creation of your veneers. We may be able to place temporary veneers the day of your first office visit depending on the situation.
At your second office visit, with your new veneers ready, we will first prepare the tooth or multiple teeth that are receiving them. We will need to reduce the thickness of your natural tooth structure to fit the veneer. This is done through buffing. We may also shape your natural tooth for ideal fit. With the original tooth now ready, Dr. Healey will cleanse the area with an agent that will assist in a better bond and then bond the veneer with specialized cement and a bonding light. He will check the bond with every visit and it the veneer is not damaged, he can re-cement.
After your visit you will receive care instructions for your veneers. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your beautiful veneers.
